Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat reported that the EU became concerned that its institutions might run out of interpreters qualified to work in Finnish, with the University of Turku in Finland set to shut down its conference interpreting training unit over reported financial worries. The University of Turku’s post-graduate conference interpreting training program is the only one of its kind in the country.
According to Helsinki Times the European commission has been concerned about the future supply of interpreters qualified in Finnish. Marco Benedetti, the head of the commission’s interpretation directorate-general, said that it was his department’s object to remind member states that the EU must support a high standard of interpretation.
