Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree establishing June 6 as the Day of Russian Language.
Under the presidential decree, the Language Day was set to celebrate annually the birthday of the great Russian writer, poet and founder of modern Russian literary
language Alexander Pushkin.
The decree came into force immediately after being signed by the president. It was passed with the goal of "preservation and development of the Russian language as a national asset of peoples of the Russian Federation, a means of international communication and an inseparable part of cultural and spiritual legacy of the world civilization."
Medvedev discussed the use of Russian language in EU member states with linguists and young specialists during a meeting at the State Pushkin Institute of the Russian Language in Moscow.
Russian Language Day is celebrated on 6 June, the birthday of famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
