Many journals publish articles in electronic form, others also in paper form. One advantage of electronic publishing is that it makes
journal articles widely available quickly and relatively cheaply.
Electronic publishing may be particularly useful for some groups, such as researchers and health professionals who work in countries where paper journals are not available.
Sometimes the journal publishes shorter versions of articles in paper form and longer versions in electronic form. These two publishing methods target different audiences. For example, the paper version of the study will not have details or any results.
Electronic publication review, which makes every reader a potential reviewer, represents a new level of peer review. Authors may make changes in response to criticism from readers. This allows for pre-review by readers and subsequent
review by authors before articles are accepted and published. This does not replace the existing peer review process, but does provide a level of criticism. It was initially hoped that reader feedback published electronically would provide the same benefits as established external peer review processes. However, in practice, review
comments are usually not as complete as in an external review and are not confidential.
