Since April 1, 2012 citizens of any such countries of European Community can make their native language an official language of the European Union. It is necessary to collect one million signatures for this. A State Duma Deputy Aleksei Zhuravlev has come forward with an initiative for granting to Russian language the status of an official language of the European Union.
On his opinion, it is possible to collect one million signatures of Russian citizens in support of granting to Russian language the status of an official language with the help of such organizations as Rossotrudnichestvo or Russian communities.
Nowadays 24 languages are official languages of the European Union. Primarily natives of former socialist republics are Russian language speakers.
